Love Letter

Dear Babies,

Exactly one year ago this morning, I found out I was pregnant. We had no idea at that point that there were actually two of you in there--but we were so excited to find out that you would be arriving, that our family would be growing. We loved you from the start. And I spent the next eight months full of excited anticipation, and that love only grew as you both grew inside of me.

Little did I know how I would feel when I finally met you. You babies are the great loves of my life, and will surely be the greatest achievements of my life. Being your mom will be the best job I will ever have. I know without a doubt that I was meant to be your mom, and you guys were meant to be my babies. You've enriched my life in unimaginable ways these past five months--you've made me a better person, more patient and understanding, more fun, innovative, and spontaneous, and more loving than I thought possible. Oh, what fun we've had! And while I already miss the itty bitty babies you started out as, I'm so excited for the little people you're growing up to be. And we're only just getting started.

All of my love forever,

Mom

Rollin' Update

Poor Addison had some terrible diaper rash going on yesterday, so last night we let her kick sans diaper for a while. That girl loves to be naked--she is so happy to go diaper free (never mind the resulting pee wee-everywhere incidents...oh well). Anyway, while I was bathing Jackson, Addison and Daniel were laying on the floor watching the Caps play hockey. Addison wanted a better view of the TV, so she kicked her way around in a circle, arched her back, and rolled over. Then she did it four more times!

Clearly, she will not be outdone by her brother.

On the Ball Again

And so ends my first three weeks back at work. Let me say two things: first, I have such a great office. They've let me work short days as I've transitioned back to work--6 hours in the office and a couple from home every day, so that I only have to miss two feedings and get to be home and around the babies as much as possible during the day. Second, to all of you moms out there, and especially those of you who work outside the home--it's really hard work! I'm exhausted! And it's only week three! We're gearing up for our annual meeting in a couple of weeks, so this past week has been intensely busy at work--which is hard to manage on little sleep, and is extra hard to focus when all you want to do is be home, holding your babies.

The transition has been hard on me, and hard on Addison and Jackson. We were doing so well making progress in sleeping through the night--but going back to work really threw a wrench into the babies' sleeping patterns. The first few nights, none of us got much sleep--which made going to work even more painful. Since then, things have gotten a little bit easier. The babies are back to going to bed around 8:00 - 8:30, sleeping until 2 or 3, up to eat, then back to sleep until 7:30 or so. On a good night, that's the schedule we follow. On a bad night, there are many more awake times, lots of rocking babies back to sleep, either Daniel or I spend part of the night sleeping on the couch so Jackson can sleep in the swing, and we wake up with both babies in bed with us. Hey, we'll take sleep wherever or however we can get it!

In the morning, it is impossible for me to get out of the house in under two hours, which seems ridiculous, but I honestly am not able to get out in less time. I have to get myself ready, get the babies fed, changed, dressed, settled, wash bottles from the night before, pump, get bottles made, wash pump pieces to take to work, pack all of my stuff up, eat breakfast, get the nanny settled--and spend any extra minutes I can with the babies--it's a production, to say the least!

By the end of the week, the house is a mess, there is a mountain of laundry, the fridge is empty, I am pooped--but I finally have reached the thing that I've looked forward to for the past five days--I get to spend the weekend with my babies.

In good news, I am literally back on the ball again. I had been sitting on an exercise ball at my desk before becoming pregnant, then switched to a more traditional office chair to help support my massive belly (and seriously, I almost fall off of the ball once a week--no pregnant woman wants to be so precariously perched!). Well, folks--I'm back on the ball. And it feels pretty good.

Growing babies!

We had a doctor's appointment today, and it's official--these babies have been busy growing!

Addison is 24.5 inches tall, which puts her in the 42nd percentile. She weighs 14 lb (43rd percentile)--all in all, the doctor pronounced her very well proportioned.

Jackson was up next--the doctor was amazed that he has caught up so quickly, considering he started out small. He is 25 inches tall (37th percentile) and weighs 16 lb 4 oz, which puts him in the 62nd percentile for weight--he's a big boy! It's funny, he only weighs a couple pounds more than his sister, but those couple of pounds are significant--Jackson feels much heavier than Addison, especially at the end of a long day!

After being thoroughly checked out by the doctor, the babies got their second series of shots--ouchie! Sad for the babies, maybe sadder for their mother.

Keep those doggies...

ROLLIN'! We have a roller on our hands! Yesterday, Jackson officially rolled over by himself. We were all laying on our tummies, having tummy time--he's just gotten the tummy thing down. Up until now, when I put him on his stomach, he kind of lays there with his face in the blanket and gets mad--all of a sudden, he's able to hold his head all of the way up and look around, and seems to kind of like the new perspective. So, he was looking around and arching his back and all of a sudden, he rolled over his right shoulder onto his back. So exciting!

To be fair, not this past Saturday but the one before, Addison was laying on our bed on her back and rolled onto her stomach--but she rolled down from a high point on our bed into the depression where Daniel sleeps. I'm not sure if it's official or fair to essentially roll down hill--but she's getting really close to rolling around on the floor by herself too. She celebrated her roll onto her stomach by promptly falling asleep.

Four Months!

We're four months old today!

This past month, the babies have gone through lots of changes. One thing that has changed is that we've gotten rid of swaddling at night. Swaddling was good for our babies--it kept them all wrapped up, happy, and asleep. But, a few weeks ago, it seemed that the babies spent more time fighting to get out of their swaddles than sleeping peacefully in them. The final straw came one night--I went into the babies' room and found that Addison had worked her arm out of her swaddle. She was quite happy with herself, and was busily sucking on her fingers. I undid the swaddle, and proceeded to re-wrap her--and she screamed at me. She was so mad that I had swooped in and undid what she had worked so long and hard to accomplish. Fine, babies, you win--no more swaddling!

The babies are moving around a lot more now. I'll go into their room to check on them in the middle of the night, and Jackson will have turned himself around in his crib. Then later in the night, he'll have completed the circle. He does a lot of moving around at night. A few weeks ago, I laid the babies next to each other on a blanket on the living room floor and walked into the kitchen to get something. When I came back out, this is what I found:

Good grief! The other thing Jackson has started doing, which is really cute, is pulling his legs into his stomach then rolling back and forth. He hasn't rolled over yet (and hates to be on his stomach, so I don't see any immediate incentive for him to actually roll over)--but he is definitely rolly polly! These babies are going to be mobile soon, which is going to be an entirely different ballgame for us. (*also noteworthy, per the above picture, we have graduated from sleeping gowns to sleep-and-plays for pjs--no more gowns for Jackson, or for Addison for that matter)

In other feats of strength, both babies sat up all by themselves in their Bumbo seats for the first time this past month. The first time, heads were perched on top of shoulders quite precariously--but everyday they get stronger and can sit by themselves for longer. If you take their hands now and pull, Addison pulls right up to the sitting position and sits straight up and looks around--Jackson locks his knees and goes right from the floor to standing. He is so thrilled to be able to stand for a long time and look you right in the eye. They both can hold their heads up, and are very steady. A game Addison plays when she's laying on the floor: she'll look at you, then turn her head away fast, then turn her head to look at you, then turn her head away fast, over and over. Jackson does a similar thing, except that his head turn is slower and more deliberate.

This is Jackson the very first time he tried sitting in the Bumbo.

And a few weeks later, both are much steadier able to sit up for much longer.

The babies have continued with their hand sucking, but Addison has found her thumb. She starts by putting her entire fist in her mouth, then methodically taking each finger out until only her thumb remains. She then has to curl her other fingers up around her nose--adorable. Jackson still prefers his entire hand, though recently he has been chomping on his index finger. Both babies have started to drool more in the past month--something tells me teeth could be on their way...

The babies love to go for walks--they like looking around, and often it calms them down enough to put them to sleep. We will be very excited when the weather gets a little bit nicer so we can get out more often.

The babies are continuing to sleep better, thank goodness! We have bathtime around 7:45, a final feeding at 8:15, then to bed--on a good night, they will sleep solidly until 3:00 (though most nights, they will wake up and need a pacifier or a quick rock-back-to-sleep before then), when they wake up for a quick snack and diaper change--then back to bed until the 6 o'clock hour. Rather than sleep until 7 or 7:30, they've been waking up at 6 and coming into bed with us. This may be a habit we eventually regret, but for now it's nice because this way we all get an extra hour of sleep--and it's sweet to get that extra cuddle time in, and to wake up with a cherubic little face right next to yours.

Speaking of bedtime routines, the babies still love their bathtime, and have started seriously wiggling and splashing in the bath. We end up with water all over ourselves, the kitchen counter, and the floor--all with happy, laughing, smiling babies. Bathtime is one of our most favorite times of the day!

The babies are still doing lots of talking these days. They are blowing raspberries, making a wide range of sounds, and working on yelling--they love to communicate. In the past few weeks, they've made significant advancements in their hand-eye coordination--they can now look at something and reach out and grab it. It's fun to see them concentrate so hard on trying to get something, and then be successful in getting it and holding onto it. Another thing that has happened in the past few weeks is that the babies have started staring at each other. They've surely been aware of each others' presence since birth (or before--they spent 9 months in close quarters, after all), but lately they've really been looking at each other a lot. And it usually makes them smile. Addison tries to hold onto Jackson's hand all of the time, which is sweet--Jackson, in return, tries to kick his sister (and he kicks hard! We have to watch him when they're playing on the floor together...).

Addison looking at Jackson.

Jackson smiling.

Jackson looking at Addison.

Looking at each other.

We've had a lot of fun so far, and it's amazing to look back and see how much the babies have grown and changed--I can't wait for what this next month is going to bring!

Happy New Year!

My current resolution is to get through the next few weeks, and to try to train myself to be functional with less sleep. Aside from that, I haven't had any time to think of New Year's resolutions. I like the new year--it's usually a time to reflect, to look back and see from where you've come, and to think ahead and plan where you'd like to go. Which is why I really liked this article I received from a friend. Since my main focus right now is survival, I'm going to steal their resolutions for my own this year. These resolutions are particularly good for me, as I tend to be an all or nothing kind of person. I'm either exercising 6 days a week, or not consistently at all. I'm on a perfect 1500 calorie diet, or pass me the cookies. So, this more gradual approach to bettering oneself is new for me, and one I quite like.

From the article entitled, "Five New Year's resolutions you can actually keep," by Jason Wright:

1. Ignore the mirror: Let's be honest, most of us aren't super models. But the truth is you're much better looking than you think are. In fact, you're actually quite beautiful. You're not as plump as you imagine, and your nose and teeth are just fine. You're divine, and those who love you agree.

2. Walk more: Don't commit to walking 40 miles a week or even an hour a day. Just commit to walking more than you did last year. Park at the back of the lot every time you're at IKEA, Wal-Mart or your local mall. Before you know it, you will have walked a marathon.

3. Eat better: Can you still eat fast food? Sure you can. Just make a conscious effort to skip it now and then. Next time you have a hankering for a hamburger, grab a salad instead. Next time you're jonesing for a soda, grab an ice-cold bottle of water from the convenience store.

4. Pray more: I had a friend tell me his key to success was kneeling in quiet prayer no fewer than six times a day. Six times? I'm delighted when I get two on my knees, one at my desk, one in my car and one on a golf course. If you feel distance between you and your Father in Heaven, step closer through prayer, but don't keep a pie chart. Just pray more than you did last year; the results will astound you.

5. Be more charitable: Are you slow to say thank you? To open doors? To forgive? Make charity a verb by seeking out small moments every single day to lift someone. Will you still get grumpy? Still have bad days? Still find yourself occasionally annoyed at people around you? Sure, but not as much as you did last year, guaranteed.

2010 was pretty great--here's to a new and exciting year.

Oh, the babies told me about their resolutions--2011 is going to be a huge year for them!

1. Sit up by ourselves.

2. Sleep through the night (mom's seriously rooting for this one).

3. Eat real food (Jackson is particularly excited about this one).

4. Grow taller.

5. Get some teeth.

6. Get some hair.

7. Log some frequent flier miles.

8. Continue to develop our adorable and charming personalities (could they be cuter? I guess we'll see!).

2011 promises to be a big year for the babies!
